Amazing woodturning skills ... almost real time.
This bowl blank was used to test out different bowl gouge grinds and I could use it as a jam chuck but this really fits this blank so you see in this video how I work without let camera rolling.
Enjoy

      Its just a different way, mass in the bottom is helpfull if the bowl wants to warp rapidly,and if I go thin then I would go from outside in.... Hope it make sense but on usually stable pieces it doesn't really matter in my opinion

    I have a question sir - I have been turning for maybe 20 years as a hobby. When I was taught, I was warned by several turners never to use a spindle gouge on a cross grain (bowl) orientation. I was told it was okay to use a bowl gouge on a spindle but never the reverse. Both you and Richard and a few other turners I’ve seen on UA-cam seem to use a spindle gouge for pretty much anything except maybe deep hollowing. Why would someone say never use a spindle gouge on a bowl? Are there certain times it’s okay and others not? Thank you for any light you shed on this.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning День тому

      Aaa yes,that is normal question as most turners think of spindle roughing gouge not to be used on facework(the one with big U shape flute) but these spindle gouges are ok, specially on outside where there is no big overhang over the tool rest. Before bowl gouges these were used for facework as well and I learn on Continental spindle gouge as bowl gouges were really hard to import here in Croatia. I would not use spindle gouges on deep inside bowl but on shallow pieces and bowls boxes its excellent and cheaper tool then bowl gouges ☺️

    Thanks again for another great explanation of how the tools work. I also follow Glenn Teague who equally well explains how both conventional gouges and his range of carbides cut. He makes a clear distinction between cutting and scraping and claims that applied correctly his carbides cut rather than scrape. To my mind, your and Richard’s application of “scrapers “ is not as a scraper, rather as a flat cutter using the burr as the blade primarily cutting the remaining side grain. Incidentally, I also enjoyed an earlier video on card “scrapers” and made a few from an old saw. I sometimes use these to refine the outside of my bowls as a a fine shear cutter. I believe that you were planning a follow up card scraping video and look forward to viewing it when it comes. Thanks again.
